Pounds Stay Off Ten Years after Weight-Loss Surgery, and People are Healthier

According to a recent study, patients who have been through weight-loss surgery 10 years ago had managed to keep off most of the weight they’d lost in a decade. Along with losing weight, patients also saw a decrease in other medical problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint diseases and breathing problems while asleep.

Dr. J. Hunter Mehaffey, from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, who was part of the study told Reuters Health by phone, "It's not just that people are losing a lot of weight, but they're also much healthier." The study identified a large database of 1,087 patients whom had had gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity between 1985 and 2004. Mehaffey and his colleagues contacted 651 of the patients by phone ten years post-surgery to ask about their progress.

On average, patients had lost 74 percent of their excess BMI two years post-surgery. After a decade, they had lost more than 25 percent of their original total body weight loss, and had still lost more than half of the excess BMI that they had lost.

At the point of surgery, 41% of the patients were diabetic but after 10 years, only 18% had diabetes. Heart disease decreased from 25% to 16% after ten years of the surgery. High blood pressure went down from 59% to 47% and sleep apnea dropped from 36% to 16% after ten years of surgery. At surgery, 61% of patients had joint disease and 38% had reflux disease. Ten years later, joint disease dropped to 32% and the rate of reflux disease fell to 29%.

The study reported in Annals of Surgery proves that the benefits of weight-loss surgery are immense, and are more effective than other weight-loss programs. Once again, this study proves the positive lasting effects weight loss surgery can have, especially when pitted against diet/medication/and exercise regimens.
