Facts about Bariatric Surgery

We found this picture on a colleague's desk recently. This resonates with many of us working in healthcare. Here are just a few facts about bariatric surgery that we try hard to help ensure do NOT get ignored:
Fact: Bariatric surgery helps to improve or resolve more than 40 obesity-related diseases and conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, sleep apnea, GERD, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and joint problems.

Fact: Bariatric surgery is an appropriate treatment for people with type 2 diabetes and obesity not achieving recommended treatment targets with medical therapies. Surgery should be an accepted option in people who have type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 35 or more. Bariatric surgery for treatment of type 2 diabetes is cost-effective ad the risk for complications and death with bariatric surgery is low and similar to that of well-accepted procedures such as gallbladder surgery.
