Top 10 Holiday Tips, Bariatric Style

1) Consider buying/making sweet treats closer to the day you need them
2) Plan well, no leftovers or give them away…“out of house, out of mouth”
3) Be leery of “bargains”, 2 for 1 junk foods at the store are 2 more than needed and NOT a bargain for your waistline.
4) Think ahead- do plan to have your favorites
5) Downsize your plate- we tend to over-serve on larger plates. And, on average, we eat 92% of what we are served. Use the bread or salad plate, 5-7 inch diameter
6) Avoid “family-style” meals except for veggies and salads
7) Be mindful of the “Variety Effect”- more variety increases how much we eat by 23%. Great effect for veggies…not so good for dessert.
8) Take the focus off of food around the holidays- Begin new family rituals- rake leaves into piles and jump for fall, try a new winter sport (XC skiing, snowshoeing), visit a new park, go to the zoo- animals are sometimes more active in cooler weather
9) Exercise is a de-stressor but take it easy on yourself if your routine is off. Use hotel gyms if traveling, morning stairs before everyone gets up, bundle up for walks after dinner, bring resistance bands with you while traveling for the holidays.
10) Through the holidays weight maintenance should be the goal for most, not weight loss.
