Why Didn't I Say Something?

Colleen Cook, Bariatric Support Centers International, talks about the importance of kind words:
Last week I was pleased to see a friend whom I had not seen for a long time. She looked great and I told her so. It looked like she had lost weight but for some strange reason, I did not comment in particular about that. Afterwards, I wondered why? Everyone, loves to hear that they look good and when someone says, “you have lost weight” that, to many of us is the ultimate compliment!

So I was perplexed as to why I did not add, “Looks like you have lost weight” to my glowing remarks about how she looked. The only thing I could think of, is that knowing that my friend struggles with self esteem issues, I withheld my weight comments thinking that she might wonder, “Hmm, did I look fat last time she saw me?”

...

Even when we think someone is perfect, strong, filled with confidence and self esteem a compliment can still go a long way. A genuine compliment helps us feel good about ourselves and our abilities. Compliments can provide us with encouragement and help to fuel our aspirations.
