Walk From Obesity

Gastric Bypass Surgery In Canada

It is a fact of the modern world that we live in that people are overweight to an increasingly unhealthy degree. Morbid obesity is no laughing matter and there are many people that are forced to face this reality everyday. For some it is simply a matter of going on a strict diet with some healthy exercise, but for others it is an uphill battle to lose those pounds that they need to, to be healthy. For people who have trouble with morbid obesity or who are unable to help themselves with a diet there is the option of gastric bypass surgery. In Canada, there are many qualified surgeons who can help people with this route if things become desperate.

While gastric bypass surgery in Canada is available just as it is available in many other countries in the world there are still people who wonder why take such desperate measures? The main reason for such a drastic step is health. People who are morbidly obese are people with a BMI (body mass index) of more than 40. Aside from the social factors and discomfort that goes associated with morbid obesity, the health issues are becoming of increasing concern to the World Health Organization (WHO). Studies have shown that persons that are morbidly obese, or even just obese, are at an increased risk for Type II diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. There are other medical conditions that have also been traced back to obesity and morbid obesity that are beyond the scope of this discussion, but the few mentioned are generally considered reason enough to avoid the condition if at all possible.

But what happens during gastric bypass surgery? In Canada, as in the rest of the world, there are different approaches to gastric bypass surgery and it is dependent on the severity of the patient's problems. In most cases the surgeon will reduce the size of the stomach dividing the stomach into pockets. The idea behind the surgery is to reduce the amount of food that a person can eat. A smaller stomach means that a person cannot eat as much as they normally would and there is a resulting loss of weight. The operation can be made permanent, though this is rarely done, and the stomach normally heals back to normal once the staples have been removed. In addition to the portioning of the stomach, the gastric tract is also rearranged to allow drainage of both the remaining sack in the stomach and the partitioned sack of the stomach.

Some people may think it is going a little far to consider gastric bypass surgery. In Canada and the rest of the world, however, it is sometimes the only option for people who are suffering from morbid obesity. The operation has come a long way and there are even methods where the surgeon no longer even has to cut the patient open to perform or undo the surgery. Whatever your opinion, this method has helped a lot of people.
