Liver Disease and Bariatric Surgery

posted by Admin User at 2019-03-01 11:07:00

New research showing the great benefits bariatric surgery can have on liver disease. Here is another study showing the positive impact bariatric surgery can have on yet another condition associated with higher weight - NAFLD (Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease).

This research on more than 220 patients found that 45% of patients that had NAFLD before surgery, continued to show no evidence of the disease 4 or more years after undergoing either a gastric bypass or gastric sleeve. One other interesting factor in this study was that the effects on the liver were not actually dependent on the patients' weight - so even with some weight regain, the positive metabolic effects that batriatric surgery had on the liver actually persisted! This makes the case for NAFLD to be considered as a strong comorbid condition associated with the disease of obesity - one that can clearly benefit greatly by a metabolic bariatric surgery, such as the gastric bypass or gastric sleeve.
