I hope this message finds you and your loved ones in good health. I would like to share some important developments about our practice and the status of bariatric surgery at our regional hospitals. For all our patients – please understand that your health is of utmost importance to us – if you are not feeling well please do not hesitate to let us know. Sadly, we have had to let go of many employees because of the profound economic devastation caused by the COVID pandemic, however we remain in place to care for you - our patients, so let us know of any pressing concerns.

Contrary to what seems like endless news stories about regional hospitals ‘opening up’ for elective surgeries – we currently have no green light from any hospital to perform bariatric surgery – or even a starting date as it stands at the moment. The governor has announced that he is allowing some counties to restart elective surgery, but this comes with many restrictions. We will likely be cleared first to start with same day procedures only, such as our endoscopies, but again in very limited capacity as allowed by the hospitals. The hospitals are working hard to develop protocols to keep patients safe as they allow more than just urgent/emergency procedures to be done - but all of this is being developed as they work with decreased staff due to layoffs. Our area hospitals continue to remain well below normal capacity for patients. And, as many of you know, we have postponed hundreds of cases and are just as frustrated as all of you affected by this. We want nothing more than to get back as soon as possible to treating the diseases of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc - the best way we know how - with Metabolic/Bariatric Surgery.

We are in daily discussions with the hospitals and will continue to make the case to allow us to perform these safe, low complication, highly beneficial surgeries - but again we must follow the mandates that the COVID pandemic has placed upon us all. We thank you for your understanding and patience and our 'Mission' is more resolute than ever: Working together with expertise to promote a supportive and safe environment for our patients as they strive to restore health and quality of life.

Yours in health,
Dr. William A. Graber
