Study Gives Evidence Bariatric Surgery Reduces Desire to Overeat Post-Operation

A study published in the latest issue of Diabetes Care, the journal of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) found that bariatric surgery reduces the desire to overeat after receiving the procedure. The research was led by Sabine Frank of the University of Tubingen in Germany.

In addition to helping patients with significant weight loss by limiting the amount they can eat, the weight-loss surgery has an effect on their cravings to eat post-operation. This may aid in the weight-loss process, but also can be a foundation for healthy eating habits in the future. 

According to the study, the reduced desire to eat could be a result of improved glycemic control that follows bariatric surgery. This phenomenon is consistent with recent results from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, which reported in the July issue of Obesity that the brain scans of severely obese women who had not undergone bariatric surgery showed that their reward centers urged them to continue eating even if their hunger had been satisfied. 
 
In this research, two groups of patients with type 2 diabetes were measured for brain activity in their reward centers. One group had undergone the Roux en-Y gastric bypass procedure at least 6 months prior, and the other group of 12 had not had surgery.

Researchers found there was less activity in the brain’s reward centers when participants were shown images of food than those who hadn’t had surgery, through Functional Magnetic Resonance Imagining (fMRI). The results were confirmed in behavioral tests given during the scans.

“Neuronal activation showed distinct differences between the groups and between the 2 task conditions,”wrote the authors about the imaging results. “The observed neuronal effects do not depend on BMI differences. Instead, the differences in food reward-association brain function might be based on substantial weight loss and improved glycemic control.”
