Review ties weight-loss surgery to better outcomes in obese patients

A recent study provides evidence that bariatric surgery actually leads to better results than diet and exercise over the first two years.
Weight-Loss Surgery Seems to Beat Diet and Exercise
Study finds surgery more effective at least two years out.

For people who have a lot of weight to lose, weight-loss surgery appears more effective than diet and exercise, a new review suggests. The one caveat to this study, however, is that the results only include two years of data, so the long-term outcomes are still unknown. This type of study, called a meta-analysis, attempts to uncover a common thread in a number of previous studies.
Other findings from the study show that weight loss surgery patients reported:
  • higher remission rates of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • greater quality-of-life measurements
  • less medication use
  • greater drops in rate of metabolic syndrome
  • greater drops in blood fat (triglycerides)
  • greater levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL)
